The OEP is a section of the Georgia Tech Police Department (GTPD). We serve the entire Atlanta campus, and also work closely with GT-Lorraine and the study abroad programs, to ensure the safety of all students, faculty, staff and visitors at Georgia Tech.
The OEP is responsible for preparing the Georgia Tech community to respond to, recover from and mitigate all hazards. The Emergency Preparedness office is also responsible for GTPD Communications.
Meet the Emergency Preparedness Team
William Smith, Director
Prior to joining the Office of Emergency Preparedness in the summer of 2009, William worked as the Operations Officer for the Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency. In that capacity, he was responsible for the City and County’s Emergency Operations Center and worked through multiple special events and natural disasters, including the Downtown Atlanta Tornado of 2008. A Marine Corps Veteran, William deployed to Iraq in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, working as an Amorer and Mortuary Affairs Specialist.
William holds a Bachelors of Science from Georgia Tech (INTA ’01) and a Masters of Public Administration from Georgia State (’05) with a Certificate in Disaster Management. He and his wife, Amanda, also a Georgia Tech alumnus (INTA ’01), live in Woodstock, GA with their two dogs, Hank and Gus.
Suzanne K Lord, Assistant Director
Suzanne, a Georgia Tech alum (BME '99), started her career in Emergency Management at the Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency. As the Senior Planner, she developed and maintained the primary emergency plans for the city and county such as the Emergency Operations Plan and the Hazard Mitigation Plan. She later joined the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) program office and served as project manager for the DHS funding allotted to the Atlanta area.
In order to spend more time with their kids (then 2 and 5), Suzanne made a career change in 2011 when she joined her husband Nate; also a GT alum (BME '99); in running the auto repair shop they own in Buford, GA. She joined Ga Tech in April 2016.
Suzanne loves spending time outdoors, camping with her family, and traveling!
